Although its overall economic uncertainty has increased, China’s economy still has great pote

China has no immediate need of aggressive stimulus to support growth unless trade tensions with the United States m

Good trade ties vital at state level in US trade relatio

US states continue to value trade relations with China, despite ongoing tensions at the i

nternational level, and they hope tensions will be resolved through negotiations.

“I’m very optimistic on the China-US trade relationship,” Cyrus Habib, lieutenant governor of Washington, said in an inter

view with China Daily as he was attending the Fifth China-US Governors Forum in Lexington, Kentucky, last week.

China is the state of Washington’s top trading partner, with more than 20 percent of the state’s expor

ts going to China, and around 30 percent of its imports came from China in 2018, according to the US Census Bureau.

“It’s truly something that touches every part of our state,” said Habib. “And that went from the i

nformation communication technology sector and manufacturing sector all the way to the agricultural industry and tourism.”

The escalation in trade tensions between China and the

he United States, may lead to weaker business confidence and slower

global trade growth, which is expected to weigh on investment and exports in 2020. But in the n

ear term, as China shows positive surprise in GDP growth in the first quarter, and the macroeconomic policies hav

e taken effects on stabilizing the growth, the GDP growth rate is likely to stay at 6.2 percent, the report said.

“In response to the growth moderation and less favorable external conditions, the government in

troduced a fiscal stimulus emphasizing tax incentives,” said Martin Raiser, World Bank Country director for China.

“While the central government has fiscal space to further increase spending, if necessary, the additional stimulus should be ap

propriately funded either directly at the central level or through additional fiscal transfers to the provinces. Highe

The huge domestic consumer market in China will dige

est most of the unsalable exports, and many of China’s exports will also shift to other foreign markets. The US will continu

e to purchase China-made goods if there are no substitutes, but US consumers will need to pay more, Guo said.

Research released by the International Monetary Fund on Friday showed that some of these tariffs have

been passed on to US consumers, while others have been absorbed by importers leading to lower profit margins.

US restrictions on high-tech exports to China will push up Washington’s trade deficit with China, and

rising prices could also reverse the low inflation in the US. Meanwhile, any speculative trading on the Chin

ese currency amid its depreciation pressure will “inevitably suffer from a huge loss”, Guo said in his speech.

“5G, industrial internet and the internet of vehicles are among the country’s top development priorities

Zhang called for accelerated efforts to set standards in key areas, including 5G, to expedite the com

It’s a good thing that China is no longer a low-wage country. Most Chinese are much better off than they were even 10 ye

ars ago. But it does mean that these low-skilled, labor-intensive industries will be moving to less-developed nations. US t

ariffs on such products will only serve to hasten the transition to higher value-added industries that China has to make anyway.

Roughly 20 years ago, when China’s admission to the World Trade Organiz

loped country that, except in a few areas, was not able to compete with Western companies in high-value-added products.

Third, we should be disseminators of Chinese civilization. Many pundits in the contemporary world think that China’s trad

Sourabh Gupta, resident senior fellow at the Washingto

ent Law-passed in March by China’s national legislature and effective in 2020-which he said is “a far

sighted piece of legislation” that “will firmly usher in a new round of reform and opening-up”.

“Strong measures to deal with political, regulatory and administrative noncompliance are envisaged. A robust wor

king mechanism to promptly address foreign businesses’ complaints is also envisaged,” said Gupta, who believes the p

rovisions are a big step in assuring foreign businesses that the playing field is leveled in China.

“It is the predictability, transparency and nondiscrimination bent of the law which, in my view, will lead to a significant inw

ard flow of foreign capital in key services and advanced manufacturing sectors,” he said.

Venezuela’s ANC president calls for defending govt

Venezuela’s National Constituent Assembly (ANC) President Diosdado Cabello called on the Venezuelan people to “d

efend” the government of President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday before the alleged coup occurred earlier.

“We invite all the people of Caracas, come to the Miraflores Palace (seat of government) immediately,” said Cabello.

Speaking to the television station VTV, Cabello said that from the “first hour” of Tues

day, President Maduro was checking and reviewing everything that had happened.

“We are already taking corresponding actions. They are fully identified. There are the sa

me coup leaders as always, those who do not respect the rules of democracy,” Cabello said.
